24" x 32" c. 1840–1860 English Japanned Papier-Mâché Tray with Gilt Chinoiserie Decoration Birmingham or Wolverhampton

$750.00
A large and finely executed rectangular tray of japanned papier-mâché, featuring a central hand-painted chinoiserie landscape rendered in gilt, surrounded by a broad gilt border of scrolling foliage. The scene, depicting stylized pagodas, pavilions, and bridgework amid an idealized natural setting, exemplifies the British fascination with the East during the mid-19th century. The surface retains its original japanned finish. The tray's material, decoration, and craftsmanship are characteristic of luxury wares produced in Birmingham or Wolverhampton workshops, particularly those of Jennens & Bettridge or similar firms active during the period. A partially intact, gilded circular label on the reverse supports attribution to a quality maker, although the specific name is no longer legible. Possibly Jennens & Bettridge. The piece remains structurally sound, with expected minor wear to the outer edges consistent with age and use. A fine example of Regency-to-Victorian decorative taste, suitable for wall display or tabletop use in a refined interior. Provenance: Private collection, East Coast U.S. Condition: Excellent overall; stable surface with minor edge wear and professionally conserved finish. Dimensions: ~24" x 32" (61 cm x 81 cm) Check out some of my other antiques: https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP?ref=search_shop_redirect§ion_id=6783279 Or just browse around the shop! https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP
