Vintage Nepali Silver Filigree Cuff Bracelet – Intricate All-Over Openwork
An unusually handsome Nepali silver cuff bracelet composed entirely of intricate filigree work, without the use of stones or other embellishment. The broad 1-inch band is formed from exceptionally elaborate openwork, with fine silver wire worked into repeating ornamental patterns across the full width of the bracelet. The effect is remarkably delicate despite the substantial amount of handwork involved.
The cuff has the open construction typical of traditional Himalayan jewelry and remains slightly flexible, allowing it to be adjusted gently to the wrist. The interior measures approximately 6½ inches including the ¾-inch opening, while the band measures approximately 1 inch in width. At 40 grams, it has considerably more substance than many of the delicate Nepali filigree cuffs encountered today. The bracelet is unmarked.
Nepal, and particularly the Kathmandu Valley, has a long and highly developed tradition of silver filigree, with Newar silversmiths especially renowned for constructing elaborate ornament from finely drawn silver wire. The quality and density of the filigree here make this a particularly attractive example of the tradition, with the absence of stones allowing the workmanship itself to remain the focus.
