A handsome mid-19th-century Scottish silver penannular brooch, probably dating to the Victorian period and reflecting the era's renewed fascination with Highland and Celtic traditions. The brooch takes the ancient penannular form, consisting of a circular silver hoop with expanded, flattened terminals and a long pin passing through the opening. Its restrained design is notably different from the elaborate cast and ornamented early medieval examples, and is consistent with the simpler Highland revival jewelry produced in Scotland during the 19th century.
The brooch is entirely unmarked but is solid silver, with the substantial weight and character of the metal appropriate to a period piece. The simple construction and gently irregular hand-finished surfaces lend it considerable charm. Acquired from a shop in Scotland, it is an excellent example of the Victorian revival of an enduring Scottish form and would make an attractive addition to a collection of Scottish jewelry, Celtic Revival objects, or antique silver.
Dimensions: Approximately 47 mm diameter
Weight: 18 grams
Material: Solid silver, unmarked
Date: Circa 1850–1870
Condition: Good antique condition, with expected surface wear consistent with age and use.
