c. 1850 William McGrew Cincinnati Coin Silver Wavy Fiddle Tipt Teaspoon Set of Six – Monogram “GH” (150 g) Citrus
$450.00
Set of six American coin silver teaspoons by William McGrew of Cincinnati, Ohio, dating to circa 1850. Each spoon executed in a refined wavy fiddle tipt form, a mid-19th century variation of the classic fiddle pattern distinguished. The strongly pointed bowl indicates these may have been for citrus.
William McGrew was an active Cincinnati silversmith working during the mid-19th century when the city served as a major commercial hub for coin silver production and distribution along the Ohio River trade network. His work reflects the transition from handcrafted regional silver to more standardized retail production serving growing inland households.
The spoons are engraved in period cursive with the monogram “GH,” indicating original ownership by a single household. All pieces are struck with McGrew’s maker’s mark within his typical rectangular cartouche on the reverse.
A well-preserved matched set representing early Cincinnati coin silver, with strong period engraving and attractive form. The set survives in excellent condition, with crisp definition to the terminals, clear engraving, and well-preserved hallmarks.
Weight: 150 grams
Dimensions: 6"
