c.1890 J.D. Schleissner & Söhne Standing Salt, Hanau, Germany – Figural Rococo Silver with Faun and Nautilus Bowl (382 grams) MAX

$1,400.00
A superb late-19th-century standing salt by J.D. Schleissner & Söhne of Hanau, among the foremost German silversmiths of the period. Cast and chased in exuberant Rococo Revival style, the piece centres on a mythological faun—a muscular figure with cloven hooves and curling legs—supporting a nautilus-form bowl richly embellished with scrolling foliage, blossoms, and marine motifs. Smaller attendant figures and floral sprays enliven the composition, demonstrating the sculptural confidence for which Schleissner’s workshop was celebrated. The interior of the bowl retains traces of original gilding, once intended to protect the silver from the corrosive effects of salt. Dimensions: 7.25 inches (18.4 cm) high Weight: 382 grams (12.28 troy oz) solid silver CODE: MAX Condition: Excellent antique condition with crisp casting and a deep, untouched patina. No repairs or losses noted; minor surface age consistent with gentle use and more than a century of life. About Hanau Silver: The city of Hanau, near Frankfurt, was one of Europe’s great silvermaking centres in the 19th century. Unbound by the guild constraints of older cities, Hanau workshops such as Schleissner embraced historic styles—Rococo, Baroque, and Renaissance—executed with remarkable technical bravura. Their creations, often fantastical in theme and exuberant in detail, remain highly sought after for their artistry and sculptural imagination. A powerful and imaginative example of Hanau workmanship—half myth, half masterpiece—and a distinguished addition to any collection of fine silver. Constructed in multiple cast sections joined with the original low-temperature solder typical of Hanau workmanship; the fine, even seam beneath the figure is original to manufacture.
