c. 1900–1920 Sylvain Kinsburger Silvered Bronze Classical Medal with Engraving Reserve (38 Grams)

$165.00
An elegant early-20th-century French silvered bronze medal by Sylvain Kinsburger (1855–1935), one of the accomplished French sculptors and medallists of the Belle Époque. The obverse presents a beautifully modeled reclining classical female figure, rendered in the refined academic style characteristic of the period. The medal is signed S. Kinsberger, a spelling of the artist's name encountered in connection with his work. The reverse is particularly appealing, incorporating a floral bouquet and an ornamental scroll or cartouche left completely blank for engraving. Such a reserve strongly suggests that the medal was intended for presentation as an award, honor, or commemorative prize, with the recipient's name or achievement to be added at the time of presentation. The fact that this example remains unengraved preserves the original design particularly well. Kinsburger was active as both a sculptor and medal engraver, exhibiting at the Paris Salon from 1878 and participating in major French exhibitions. Examples of his bronze medals are documented in the auction record. Executed in silvered bronze, the substantial 41 mm medal has excellent sculptural presence and the pleasing two-tone appearance produced by the surviving silvering and darker recessed surfaces. A handsome example of Belle Époque French medallic art by a recognized sculptor and medallist. Dimensions: 41 mm diameter Weight: 38 grams Material: Silvered bronze Maker: Sylvain Kinsburger (signed S. Kinsberger) Date: Circa 1900–1920 Condition: Good antique condition, with attractive age-related patination to the silvered bronze. Reverse cartouche remains completely blank and available for engraving.
