c. 1920s–1930s Japanese Hattori Silver Bonbonnière, Wisteria Engraving, Original Presentation Case
$400.00
An elegant Japanese silver bonbonnière attributed to K. Hattori & Co., Tokyo, featuring a refined circular form and delicate engraved garlands of wisteria. The box is of the same form as a Hattori silver bonbonnière illustrated in a reference collection, although the engraving on this example differs.
The defining feature is its exceptionally close-fitting lid, which meets the body at the midpoint with an almost seamless join. The exterior is sparsely decorated with graceful wisteria garlands, while the interior remains plain and unadorned. The understated ornament and precision of the construction give the piece a quietly sophisticated character.
The box is accompanied by a fitted wooden presentation case with a sliding lid and a patterned textile drawstring pouch, constructed of silk-lined cotton with intricate geometric designs. A small handwritten note bearing Japanese characters is also present. The wooden case bears a Japanese Hattori mark incorporating a pocket-watch emblem, and an exterior sticker reads “Made in Japan.”
K. Hattori & Co. was founded by Kintaro Hattori in 1881 and became a prominent Japanese watch and jewelry business. The Hattori association, distinctive form, and accompanying presentation accessories make this an appealing example of Japanese silverwork and early 20th-century giftware.
