Ca. 1765 David T. Peter Dublin Sterling Silver Tablespoon, Mermaid in Her Vanity (72 g)

$450.00
A fine mid-18th-century Irish sterling silver tablespoon, made in Dublin circa 1765 and attributed to David T. Peter, with an elegant upturned terminal and an unusually appealing heraldic motif. The spoon has a substantial, well-proportioned form with a gracefully upturned terminal. On the reverse of the terminal is a finely rendered mermaid in her vanity, holding a mirror in one hand and a comb in the other. The motif is a traditional heraldic representation of the mermaid contemplating her reflection, and is particularly charming on an Irish silver spoon of this period. The maker's mark is cursive and partially effaced/misstruck, but is consistent with the mark of David T. Peter, a Dublin silversmith recorded working during the 1760s. At approximately 8½ inches in length and weighing 72 grams, the spoon has the substantial proportions characteristic of quality Georgian Dublin table silver. An attractive example of early Irish provincial-style silver with an unusual and decorative terminal, suitable for a collection of Georgian Irish silver or heraldic silver.
