Chinese Bronze Luduan Scroll Weight Pair

Pair of Chinese bronze scroll weights, each cast in the form of a seated luduan (甪端), the auspicious mythical beast of Chinese tradition. The compact creatures are modeled with horned heads, open mouths, prominent eyes, clawed feet and elaborately ornamented bodies covered with stylized cloud and scrolling motifs. The luduan was an auspicious mythical creature associated with wisdom, discernment and the scholarly world, and representations of mythical beasts were used as weights for holding down papers and calligraphic scrolls on the Chinese scholar's desk. The two examples are closely matched in form and size and weigh almost exactly the same, suggesting that they were produced as a pair. They retain an attractive dark brown/olive bronze surface with lighter wear to the raised decoration. Dimensions: Each approximately 1½" high x 1¾" wide x 2" long. Weight: 198 grams and 200 grams respectively. Good antique condition with expected surface wear and oxidation consistent with age. Please see photographs for details of the surfaces and casting.
