Circa 1835 Walter Pearce Norfolk, Virginia Coin Silver Julep Cup / Beaker (96 g)
$2,500.00
Offered is a scarce Southern coin silver julep cup or beaker by Walter Pearce of Norfolk, Virginia, one of the region's most respected early nineteenth-century silversmiths. Pearce was active in Norfolk from approximately 1831 to 1842 before relocating to Mobile, Alabama, where he continued his distinguished career. His Virginia silver is considerably scarcer than his later Alabama work and is highly sought after by collectors of early Southern and Virginia coin silver.
The cup has a classic slightly tapered cylindrical form measuring 3.25 inches tall, with a gracefully flared 2.75-inch rim and a 2.125-inch foot. Both the rim and foot are decorated with finely milled floral borders, an elegant detail that distinguishes this form while retaining the restrained proportions favored during the second quarter of the nineteenth century.
The base is struck with Walter Pearce's Norfolk maker's mark.
Condition is good overall, with honest wear to the milled decoration at the rim and foot along with surface scratches and signs of age and careful use consistent with nearly two centuries of service. It presents beautifully with a rich antique character and has not been over-restored.
Examples of Walter Pearce julep cups are uncommon on the market. A closely related example of nearly identical size sold at Jeffrey S. Evans' Premier Americana sale, where its rarity and importance as Virginia coin silver were recognized with spirited bidding.
Whether displayed alongside other early Virginia silver or used as intended for a traditional mint julep, this is an outstanding example of antebellum Southern craftsmanship from one of Norfolk's premier silversmiths.
Dimensions:
Height: 3.25 in.
Diameter at rim: 2.75 in.
Diameter at foot: 2.125 in.
