Etching or Engraving of Arch of Marius, at Orange, on the Rhone. - Arc de Marius, à Orange, sur le Rhône
Arch of Marius at Orange, the Rhône moving beside it like a ribbon of memory — Arc de Marius, à Orange, sur le Rhône; Marius Pforte zu Orange, an der Rhone — three languages circling one Roman shadow. Drawn by Thomas Allom, engraved in steel by J. Carter, and published by Fisher, Son & Co. of London and Paris, this plate carries the quiet authority of 1845. The words are by the Reverend George Newenham Wright, lifted from Volume I, page 63 of France Illustrated, a work devoted to landscape, antiquity, and the solemn poetry of military and ecclesiastical stone. Printed at The Caxton Press in St. Martin’s-Le-Grand, London, and in Paris on Rue Neuve Vivienne, rendered in black and white — steel on paper, shadow doing what color never could. The condition remains strong, with only the faintest edge wear, time touching it lightly but leaving the monument.
Dimensions: 7.125" x 10.75"
