Late 19th Century Hanau .800 Silver Repoussé Basket with Putti & Hidden Hearts (276 g)
A superb late-19th-century Hanau .800 silver basket, beautifully hand-raised and richly decorated in high repoussé with the exuberant craftsmanship for which the workshops of Hanau became renowned. The center features a charming group of playful putti surrounded by flowing scrollwork, while the pierced and repoussé border is adorned with overflowing baskets of flowers linked by an elegant ring of cleverly concealed hearts—a delightful detail that rewards close inspection.
The basket's graceful circular form is enhanced by a finely worked openwork rim, creating a light and airy appearance while showcasing the remarkable skill of the silversmith. The crisp repoussé work exhibits excellent depth and definition, from the expressive faces of the putti to the delicate blossoms and scrolling foliage surrounding the border.
Marked ".800" for silver purity and a maker mark, the basket weighs a substantial 276 grams and measures approximately 8.75 inches in diameter and 2 inches high. Its generous size makes it ideal as a centerpiece, bread basket, fruit basket, bonbon server, or elegant display piece.
Dimensions: 8.75 inches (22.2 cm) diameter × 2 inches (5.1 cm) high
Weight: 276 grams (8.87 troy oz) .800 silver
Condition: Excellent antique condition with crisp repoussé detail and an attractive, untouched patina. No repairs or significant damage noted, with only light surface wear consistent with careful use over more than a century.
About Hanau Silver:
The city of Hanau, near Frankfurt, was one of Europe's foremost silver-making centers during the late nineteenth century. Free from many of the guild restrictions imposed elsewhere in Germany, Hanau silversmiths embraced historic European styles, producing richly ornamented works inspired by Rococo, Baroque, and Renaissance originals. Their exceptional repoussé work, imaginative designs, and outstanding craftsmanship continue to make Hanau silver highly desirable among collectors today.
An elegant and highly decorative example of late nineteenth-century Hanau silver, combining exceptional repoussé artistry with charming figural decoration and whimsical hidden details that make this basket a standout addition to any collection of fine Continental silver.
