A handsome late Qing Chinese copper enamel snuff bottle decorated in blue and white with two five-clawed dragons in pursuit of the flaming pearl. The dragons are rendered in a lively continuous composition against the blue-and-white enamel ground, with the characteristic auspicious symbolism of the imperial dragon and flaming pearl. The bottle is surmounted by a pink stone cap, which is original to the piece and provides an attractive contrast to the predominantly blue and white decoration. The underside bears a Qianlong mark in enamel. While bearing a Qianlong mark, the bottle is characteristic of the later Qing taste for revival and reinterpretation of earlier imperial designs and is appropriately described as late Qing rather than as a Qianlong-period work.
