This Roman-era spoon was recovered from a Hoxne, England area collection. Made from a heavy gauge of silver, it has many interesting features. Starting with the knob, a cloven Artiodactyla hoof with elongated toes. This is fixed to a multi-sided shaft where each side is embellished with a groove down the length of the shaft. this comes to a chased (feathered) joint that closely resembles other known Roman spoon examples. To this the bowl flows. The bowl itself is somewhat elongated with a flat lip along the eating surface and a plain reverse. The bowl also bears a simple line decoration.
Condition: Patina on this spoon is heavy and seemingly every surface has a soft worn finish. Small ding in the bowl. Some small deep scratches in bowl. Bends and a slight twist to stem. Couple small nicks to the bowl edge.
The spoon is 6.25+"
Weight: 40 grams
