A handsome vintage Chinese celadon-colored jade cylindrical bead, hand worked in a simple, substantial barrel form. The stone has a pleasing celadon tone with a very glossy polish by eye, while examination under magnification reveals a more textured, slightly leathery surface with minute natural pits characteristic of the material. A few tiny areas of russet-colored mineral staining are scattered across the surface. The bead measures approximately 23 mm in length and 20 mm in diameter, with straight cylindrical sides and flat ends. The perforation is slightly off center, with visible grinding and working marks around the mouth of the bore on both ends, reflecting traditional lapidary methods. It is an attractive, tactile example of Chinese jade workmanship with an understated archaic character. The bead was acquired from the collection of a major Chinese antiques dealer, adding interesting collecting provenance.
